Until You Take This Challenge

A woman climbing a rock

Because I teach outdoor skills, I have Google tell me anytime a story appears about a lost hiker.

I collect these stories because I use them to teach people to always bring the 10 essentials with them, even on a short hike.

I remember this time my friends and I were at Cleburne State Park and this new guy showed up to join our group (it was a campout arranged on Meetup).

He was one of those soft-macho types.

I call him soft-macho because he was adamant about talking about doing dangerous outdoor activities.

I do extreme outdoor activities like backpacking in mountains with narrow ledges and sleeping in rattlesnake country without a tent but I take safety precautions.

I want to come back home in one piece.

He persuaded my friends to go on a night hike. I joined and kept to the back of the back.

At one point, he decided to go off-trail and he fell into the lake.

Thankfully he was unhurt but if he fell in a few hours later, I would have had to apply First-Aid because the temperatures crashed into the 20s.

I know that outdoor skills can seem boring to learn at home.

Or maybe you think you can only practice them if you are in the woods.

But I created a 5-day challenge that is fun to do and you can practice them anywhere.

Plus, you can buy it on Amazon!

Check it out here.
